Federal Skilled Trade

FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES (FST) program

This is one of the Express entry programs and it is for skilled workers with work experience with the intention of becoming permanent residents of Canada.

Minimum Requirements

The candidate must meet all the minimum requirements in order to be eligible. They must have a:

Proof of Language for English or French
  • CLB 5: Speaking and Listening
  • CLB 4: Reading and writing
  • Valid for 2 years after the date of the test result and on the day of application.
  • Enter the test results in Express entry profile
Work Experience in a skilled trade
  • Full time: 2 years
  • Part time work: 2 years equivalent
  • Within 5 years before applying
  • Meet the job requirements for the job skilled trade according to the National Occupation Classification (NOC)
  • Must be for paid work
  • Can be non-continuous
Job Offer or Certificate of qualification
  • Full time employment, paid and continuous (1560 hours)
  • Minimum of 1 year
  • Can be by up to 2 employees
  • In a skilled trade occupation
Certificate of qualification or (Qualification certificate)
  • This is a certificate issued by either the federal or province or territory, as a proof that the worker is qualified to work in that skilled trade within Canada.
  • Their training, skills and trade experience are assessed
  • Each province and territory have their own process and requirements
  • They must
  • - have passed the certification examination
  • - meet all the provincial or territorial requirements for the trade
Have required funds for the applicant and accompanying family members. Except:
  • Candidate has a valid job offer from an employer in Canada
  • Legally able to work in Canada
Must be allowed to enter Canada. Applicant did not have risks for
  • Security
  • Criminal
  • Medical
