PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS

This is an application process whereby the sponsor applies to sponsor parent and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada. The sponsor applies to be a sponsor and signs a sponsorship agreement and an undertaking.

WHO YOU CAN SPONSOR:
SPONSORS REQUIREMENTS: The sponsor must:
INCOME REQUIREMENTS

The sponsor and co-signer, must show proof of funds from their tax return showing their income for the past 3years prior to the date of the application.

FAMILY SIZE FOR PROOF OF FUNDS:

The sponsor must proof that they have sufficient funds to support all the people that they are sponsoring. The family size is used to calculate the amount required for proof of funds by the sponsor. 

The family size includes the sponsor’s family and the people to be sponsored with their family, whether they are permanent residents, citizens or not coming to Canada.

Sponsor’s Financial Obligation

The sponsor has to sign an agreement and promise to be financially responsible for the parents and grandparents been sponsored for a period of time. This is called an undertaking. 

The undertaking requires them to:

  • Be financially responsible for them for 20 years effective from when they become permanent residents
  • Refund any social assistance received by the sponsored parents or grandparents
Sponsorship Agreements

Sponsorship agreements are also signed by the sponsor and the sponsored family members and they agree to adhere to certain responsibilities such as: 

  • sponsor will provide the basic needs of the sponsored family including
    • food, clothing, utilities, shelter, household supplies
    • health care, personal needs, fuel 
  • sponsored person will support themselves and their family members 

This agreement is still valid even if:

  • there is divorce, separation, marriage ends
  • unemployment
  • changes in financial situation
  • family splits 
  • death of principal applicant
