A visitor visa, also known as a temporary resident visa, is a permit granted to travellers from visa required countries. They are required to permit such visitors to enter Canada or to assist them when transiting through Canada to their final destination. This document is placed inside their passport as a sign that all the requirements needed to enter Canada has been met. It also shows the date by which you must arrive in Canada.

A visitor visa may be a single or multiple entry visas. Most visa applicants in Canada are granted a multiple entry visa which is valid for up to 10 years or a month before the passport expires, whichever which comes first. A multiple visa permits the person to stay up to 6 months at a time in Canada, as many times as possible.

At the port of entry, the border officer will issue a visitor record which is a document to extend or reduce your stay in Canada. After have arrived in Canada, if the visitor wants to stay more than the required 6 months in Canada, they will need to apply for a visitor record latest by 30 days before their visa expires. This visitor record will also show the date the visitor must leave Canada.

Minor children travelling to Canada must obtain a visitor visa even when accompanying their parents or when travelling alone. They need to have a valid passport and a letter of authorization signed by both parents or by their legal guardian.
